My AC isn't working but I think it might be something simple.

What can I do?

If there is power to the thermostat and the furnace:

  • Reset the AC breaker
  • Check the AC disconnect*
  • Wait 5 minutes for the system to cycle

*The AC Disconnect is a little box outside on the wall next to the exterior unit that looks like this image. There is a handle that pulls out and flips. The entire thing will turn and it should say "on".

What if the thermostat is blank?

  • Reset the AC breaker
  • Check the wall switch (depending on furnace location, it
may be in attic or closet), it looks like a light switch. If the
switch is down, flip up to the on position and wait a few
minutes for the unit to start.
  • If the wall switch is not off, check and see if the drain pan
under the unit has water in it. If there is water in the drain
pan feel free to shop vac the water for a quick fix and
immediate power. Call ASAP Heating & Air to schedule a
service call for a permanent solution to this issue.

What if the AC is on, but it's not cooling well?

  • Check your air filters

You may have more than one air filter to check depending on the size and layout of your home. Sometimes they're attached to the unit, and most commonly, they're larger return vents that suck air in (they don't blow air out). If the air filters are clogged, this will dramatically impact your unit's cooling ability.

My heat isn't working but I think it might be something simple.

What can I do?

If this is your first time turning on heat this season:

    • Wait 5-10 minutes (some thermostats have a delay)
    • Reset the breaker
    • Make sure the gas is turned on (if you have a gas furnace)

The gas is on if the valve is parallel with the gas pipe, and it is off if the valve is perpendicular to the gas pipe.
